In honor of Black History Month and the 2026 theme “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” we invite community members of all ages to participate in our annual essay contest. This year’s focus is on reflection and how Black history has been remembered, taught, and passed down, and why those stories continue to matter today.
Essays should respond to the provided prompt and may reflect on personal experiences, historical figures, community stories, or moments in Black history that deserve continued recognition.
The contest is open to all ages, with winners selected in multiple age categories. Prizes will be awarded, and winning essays will be displayed at the library. Selected winners will be invited to read their essays (or excerpts) during a special Community Reflection Night later in the month.
Submit your essay by February 16 by 12 PM for a chance to win and be featured!
Prompt: Reflect on how Black history has been taught, celebrated, or remembered in your life. Whose stories stood out? Whose stories are still missing?
