Grow, Share, and Give Back with Us
Join our community-driven initiative to promote sustainable gardening and biodiversity through seed sharing.
Our Seed Library Vision
E.G. Fisher Public Library’s Seed Library is a community-driven initiative that makes gardening more accessible, sustainable, and rewarding for everyone. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, our goal is to help you grow—literally! By providing free seeds, we’re encouraging people to grow their own food, support pollinators, and learn the importance of seed saving.
How to Participate
Step 1
Visit our library and browse the Seed Library collection to select seeds you’d like to grow.
Choose up to three seed packets per day to take home. Each packet contains a small portion of seeds, perfect for trying something new without needing a big garden. No checkout required—just take what you’ll use!
Optional: Want to take home extra seeds? Bring in a seed donation! If you donate a packet with at least 5 viable seeds, you can exchange for up to three additional seed packets per day—that’s a total of six packets! This is a great way to share your harvest or donate store-bought seeds to help the community.
Step 2
Plant your seeds, nurture them, and enjoy the process of growing flowers, herbs, or vegetables right at home. We have books and resources to help you get started!
Step 3
Harvest seeds from your plants and return a portion to the library to support future growers. Just follow the guidelines below to ensure quality donations!
Seed Donation Guideline
To ensure a bountiful harvest, start by choosing the healthiest plants for seed collection. Allow seeds to mature fully on the plant before harvesting.
- Fresh Seeds Only – Seeds should be from the most recent growing season (no more than 2 years old). Older seeds may have a low germination rate.
- Properly Dried & Cleaned – If you’re donating seeds you’ve harvested, make sure they are fully dried and free of mold, debris, or plant material.
- Clearly Labeled – Please include the plant name, variety, and date collected (e.g., ‘Cherry Tomato – July 2024’). If they need special planting instructions, feel free to add those too!
- No Invasive or Hybrid Seeds – To protect local ecosystems, we cannot accept invasive species or hybrid seeds (hybrids may not grow true to type).
- Minimum of 5 Seeds Per Packet – This ensures everyone has a fair amount to grow.
